Terraces, cloud, and a valley that changes every twenty minutes.
Sapa sits at about fifteen hundred metres in the far north, six hours from Hanoi. It is the one place in Vietnam where you can shoot a couple against a mountain and have it look like nowhere else on earth.
The honest version: Sapa makes its own weather and does not consult anybody. Cloud fills the valley for days, then lifts for twenty minutes and hands you the best frame of the trip. We plan for that rather than hope against it, which means a second location in our pocket and a willingness to move the whole session forward an hour when the sky opens.
When it is clear, the terraces fall away below you in steps for a kilometre, and the light at seven in the morning comes in sideways through the mist. That is the picture people come for.
Most couples drive up from Hanoi the day before, or take the night train to Lao Cai. We start before sunrise, work the terraces and the passes while the mist is still moving, break during the hard midday light, and finish in the late afternoon. Six working hours, two locations, and a car that stays with us all day.
A Sapa session is USD 1,480, with hair and make-up, two gowns and one suit, 300 to 400 original files and 40 retouched photographs. Team travel and stay are quoted separately, usually USD 150 to 250.
If you want mountains, terraces and cloud, yes, and there is nothing like it anywhere else in Vietnam. Be realistic about the weather: Sapa makes its own, and cloud can sit in the valley for days. We build a second location into every Sapa plan for exactly that reason.
Late August into early September. That fortnight is the most photogenic of the year and also the most booked, so ask early. Water-filled terraces in May and June are the other beautiful window, when the fields mirror the sky.
Five to six hours by road from Hanoi, or the night train to Lao Cai and an hour up the mountain. Most couples drive up the day before, shoot at sunrise, and drive back the following afternoon.
